But I'm Hungry! Teams Up with Meal Journaling Service, MealLogger

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 12, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The But I'm Hungry! team is proud to introduce a collaboration with MealLogger, a suite of online nutrition coaching tools for smartphones. The software was designed to give professional dietitians a clear and continuous visual record of their client's meals so they can help them make the right modifications to their diets.

According to Sue Mellen, editor of But I'm Hungry!, the new e-book that looks at the role hunger plays in scuttling peoples' attempts to develop healthy eating habits, "This is really a marriage made in Nutrition Heaven," she says. "In the book, we offer a range of tools to help people deal with hunger and change their eating habits. The Number One tool we mention is a food journal, and MealLogger lets people create the ultimate food journal."

A Marriage Made in Nutrition Heaven

But I'm Hungry! readers can now use MealLogger to put the message of the book into practice. When someone clicks the Buy Now button (for either the pdf or epub version of But I'm Hungry!) at www.butimhungry.net/ordernow they'll be taken to PayPal, where they'll be able to pay for the book through a PayPal account or major credit card. The But I'm Hungry! team will then receive notification of the payment and send the buyer a link to their book. Along with that link will be a special code allowing them to sign up, free of charge, for the MealLogger service athttp://butimhungry.meallogger.com/user_signup/.

MealLogger's photo-based meal-journaling tools allow individuals to keep track of their meals in pictures. Unlike traditional meal logs, all people need is their smartphone and they can conveniently capture all their meals wherever they are. When used in tandem with the nutritional advice offered in But I'm Hungry!, people can better keep track of their new dietary regimen, making them one step closer to achieving their fitness/nutrition goals. Not only doesMealLogger make keeping a food journal easier, but MealLogger photo food journals can be shared to Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites to help readers create new conversations around healthy eating and lifestyle change.

This is the first time the MealLogger tools, usually reserved for healthcare professionals, have been made available to individuals interested in better controlling their diets.

About But I'm Hungry!

MealLogger used as research tool in global infant mortality research project

posted at 09.20.2011 |

MealLogger is being used by the University of Helsinki in a research project called GloCal, which aims to develop new approaches to reduce infant mortality in developing countries. The researchers use MealLogger to help document and analyze the diets of infants and young children in India.

- We are going to monitor about 80 mothers in four villages and will use traditional research tools and MealLogger to document the diets of their children. The pictures combined with textual descriptions will help us researchers to really see, what the children are eating, the nutritional value of their meals and where improvements could be made, project researcher Marianne Prasad from the University of Helsinki says.

High infant mortality is one of India’s largest challenges. Malnutrition especially during the first two years of the child’s life has a negative impact on a child’s development and ultimately survival.

The aim of the GloCal project is to develop new mobile nutrition counseling services. In the beginning, the goal is to use mobile applications and solutions to guide and advice mothers on how to feed their children and to provide health care workers information about the nutritional needs of infants and the importance of nutrition to overall health. In the long term, the goal of the project is to develop comprehensive mobile children’s health services that benefit both mothers and health care workers.

The pilot phase of the project will last for two years. Partners include the Tampere University of Technology, Aalto University, Nokia, Datafisher and several NGOs. The first field research phase in India will start in October 2011.

- It will be very interesting to be able to test new technology in the field of nutritional research, the leader of the research project, Professor of Nutrition Physiology Marja Mutanen, from the University of Helsinki says.

- In addition to using traditional nutrition analysis software, with MealLogger we have a have a chance to try something new. I believe the visual dimension that MealLogger adds to our data will help us researchers get an even more accurate picture of the diets of the participating children, Marianne Prasad says.

MealLogger Debuts at American Dietetic Association (ADA) Food & Nutrition Expo

posted at 11.08.2010 |

Nutrition Advice on the Go: MealLogger Debuts at American Dietetic Association (ADA) Food & Nutrition Expo Interactive food “photo journal” tool for dietitians unveiled at the world’s largest annual meeting of food and nutrition professionals to be held in Boston, Massachusetts November 6 – 8, 2010

November 6, 2010 Boston, MA – MealLogger is an easy and personal coaching service that allows you to “take your dietitian” to your next meal. Clients use a free phone app to take photos of their meals and send them to an interactive website for their health professional to review.

Unveiled at the American Dietetic Association (ADA's) 2010 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo, November 6-9 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts, spokesperson and wellness expert Denice Ferko-Adams says that this tool will change how dietitians work with clients.

Registered dietitian Ferko-Adams stated: “We already know that keeping food records is effective for losing weight, but written food records are tedious and may not always be accurate. For the dietitian to actually see the foods eaten by the client at each meal is fantastic. The MealLogger web site allows dietitians to stay in touch between office visits. For the client, it is like having a dietitian in your pocket!”

Key Facts:

•MealLogger is an easy-to-use application. A person takes a snapshot of their meal and uploads it to the MealLogger website from their cell phone. Their health professional views the image on their computer and provides personalized feedback that is linked to the meal photograph.

• MealLogger enables professionals to provide real-time feedback and advice to clients as they eat. It is easy to detect trends in clients’ eating habits from the visual food journal.

• MealLogger is compatible with all major smartphones

• MealLogger is offered as a service by select nutrition professionals both in the private and public sectors and is already being used to counsel people with diabetes or eating disorders, athletes, weight loss, business travelers, executives, and teens

• Consumers can find a dietitian using Meallogger by visiting www.meallogger.com.

Why MealLogger Works:

• The power of food photo journals – Food journals work. Research shows that keeping food records is a better predictor of weight loss success than BMI, age or frequency of exercise.

• Recent clinical research suggests that creating photo journals can have a dramatic, positive impact on dietary behavior. By stopping to take the picture of the food, the person must pause and evaluate what they are about to consume.

• Making incremental changes in diet – MealLogger is not a diet program. It’s an interactive tool that helps health professionals to connect with their clients and help them make small, incremental changes to their eating habits.

What are Registered Dietitians saying about MealLogger:

“MealLogger gives my clients the accountability they need to stay focused on healthy choices.” Cece L. Davis, RD, CSSD, LD - Nutrition Consultants of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK

“This tool is so much easier than other applications. The date and time stamping are great features: it helped a business woman who travels to discover that she is grazing more than she imagined. It’s a great tool!”

Rene Norman, RD, LD - Nutrition Consultants of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK

“Some people cannot afford to see me as often as they need. MealLogger gives them the opportunity to get that extra coaching without making as many appointments.”

Connie Bendel, RD, LD - - Nutrition Consultants of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK

“My clients know the value of a food log, but struggle with the time it takes to complete. Taking pictures of everything they eat and drink makes a food log simple, quick and effective tool for behavior change.”

Lynn Grieger, RD, CDE, cPT – Health, food and fitness coach, Manchester, VT

Meallogger is a wonderfully innovative tool that is convenient and easy for clients to track their choices; with a real time pause built in to create a level of awareness prior to eating. The visual feedback for the client combined with the ease and speed for the nutrition coach to provide feedback makes this a tool that is highly utilized!

Julie Schwartz MS, RD, CSSD, LD, ACSM-HFS – Atlanta, GA

“In using MealLogger with a female bulimic patient, she found by taking photos and seeing the excess foods, it helped her not to overeat. I am looking forward to using this tool in my practice.”

Donna Israel, PhD, RD, LPC, FADA – Professional Nutrition Therapists, Dallas, TX

“We used MealLogger as an addition to a 60-day health challenge for a small company following their initial biometric screening. The program participants were all clamoring to be the ones to try it out! “

Carole Ireton-Jones, PhD, RD, LD, CNSD – Professional Nutrition Therapists, Dallas, TX
